How to Talk About Dates in Spanish

Capitalization

In Spanish the names of the months are only capitalized if they begin a sentence. This differs from English where names of months are always capitalized.

Spanish: enero
English: January

In Spanish – Put the Month After the Date

When talking about dates in English the month can placed either before or after the date.

Before: The fourth of July
After: July fourth

When talking about dates in Spanish the month must always be placed after the day.

After: El cuatro de julio

Cardinals or Ordinals?

Dates in English are said and written using ordinal numbers (first, second, third). Spanish, however, uses cardinal numbers (one, two, three).

The exception to this rule is the first of the month in Latin America where it’s common to use the ordinal number (first) for the first day of the month. Example: El primero de diciembre.

English: The twenty-fifth of December.
Spanish: El veinticinco de diciembre.

This literally translates to: The 25 of December.

Example Phrases

Spanish: ¿Qué fecha es hoy?
English: What day is it?

Spanish: Hoy es diez de mayo.
English: Today is May 10th.

Spanish: Hoy es veinticuatro…
English: Today is the twenthy fourth…

Spanish: …de diciembre.
English: …of December.

Spanish: ¿Qué dia nos vemos?
English: What day will we meet?

Spanish: El seis de marzo.
English: On March 6th.
