Learn to Speak Spanish Mexican Style

(It’s Easier If You Imagine You Are On a Beach in Cancun!)

by Pierre Roustan

Really do that right now.  Take a deep breath, look at the pictures and imagine how much more fun it would be if you could learn Spanish before you went!  Yes, I know, it sounds like I’m trying to get you to learn to speak Spanish the Mexican way with an appeal to your emotions – think of the sandy beaches, Acapulco, aaaah, yes, Mexico. Beautiful, beautiful Mexico.

Of course you’re right, but if you can use your emotions to help you learn something good, how would you describe that in Spanish.  You’re right.  “Mucho Gusto!”

Makes learning Spanish a bit more fun? Si.  Okay, so let’s get our heads out of the fantasy and into the real world. The fact is this:

Learning Spanish Can Be Strenuous

No, you won’t be on the beaches, talking to all the beautiful Spanish-speaking people there (although that would be a great way to learn a new language, maybe).

You’ll be in the comfort of your own home, learning Mexican Spanish. Watching this 60-second instructional video. And pressing the easy ‘Try It’ button! But the ease of use doesn’t stop there….

You know the drill: get the books, write down the words over and over and over again. And over again. Then you speak it – over, and over, and over again. Until you’re blue in the face.

Yes, it’s strenuous.

And the worst part? After all that studying, you hardly remember half of what you’ve ‘learned.’

It Really Is Going to Be ‘Easy’

Lose the books, put down your pad and pencil. Because the method of Language101 will pleasantly shock you.

Many learners seem to forget that the method matters. If you’re method of learning isn’t right, you’re not going to remember much of what you learned, well…right. In fact, chances are it’s all going to be wrong. And we don’t like wrong, do we?

What Language101 taps you into will be a set of lessons, giving you the tools on learning to speak Spanish, recorded by authentic educated Mexican Spanish speakers –

So the reality is this – It’s going to be like you’re actually there in Mexico!

That’s just the start. Know this: there are two aspects to excellent language learning.

Aspect #1: Spaced Repetition

Bear with me on this. I know, at first you’re looking at this and thinking you’ve been ‘had.’ Or you’re wondering what this all means about ‘Repetition.’

First off, everyone knows constant repetition solves nothing. Even after an hour or two of cramming! Even after it’s obvious that you pretty much know the words, right? So confident, so cool. And then guess what happens – test time has come, and you’ve forgotten every darn thing.

Mark my words: it’s not how much you do the repetition; it’s how you do the repetition.

The key that is clear in Language101 is increasing time intervals. The brain’s basically a muscle. And like all muscles, you have to train it. How do you train it?

With repetitions.

It’s a gradual thing, though. You don’t just bust in fifty or so reps and call it good. You start small. Then you build up to something more – and then something more after that.

Language101 is a lot like that. When you learn to speak Spanish Mexican style, every time you repeat a word, either written or spoken, you increase the interval between each repetition, like this: coche…. wait one minute, coche…. (‘coche’ means car, by the way) wait five minutes, coche…. Wait ten minutes.

These lessons literally lay it out for you, accurate to the second. Think of it as your own personal trainer – your personal language trainer!

The second aspect is this….

Aspect #2: Questions

Tell me if you recognize this: you’re listening to one of those instructional language recordings, and you hear a guy (or girl) say a Spanish word:

Biblioteca.

What does that word mean? Oh, don’t worry – you’ll find out soon, like in a few seconds. Because in the recording you’ll then hear the same speaker say the English word….

Library.

The idea is that you’ll hear the Spanish word, and then the English word; and then you’ll somehow put the two together! It makes perfect sense.

The problem is this: what you hear isn’t the same as what you understand.

Bits of information get coded into your brain, delivered by your ears, basically one at a time. As you read these words, you assimilate their meanings and then put them together by way of the English language.

So when you hear the word ‘biblioteca’ and ‘library’ spoken, for one thing, you’re hearing the word ‘biblioteca’ all by itself and thinking to yourself…. “Huh?” And the word ‘library’ is pretty much self-explanatory. You know what it means, you assimilate it, you understand it.

But you don’t make that connection between the English word and Spanish word!

Language101 bridges that connection for you. Language101 will help you learn to speak Spanish. How? By the use of questions.

Here’s why. What happens when someone asks you a question? ….I bet I know what you’re doing right now.

You’re thinking.

That’s the most important part of learning. It’s the thinking.

What these lessons do is not a repetitive ‘biblioteca,’ ‘library’ speaker droning on in the recording. Instead, you’ll hear the simple question – “What is the Spanish word for ‘library’?”

Think of anything else out there that’ll make you think of the answer. The brain actively searches for it (typically by looking at notes or a booklet or something like that), finds it, and then ‘stores’ it in your brain.

You worked so hard to actually find the word that there’s no misplacing or dropping it! In essence…. You have a much better chance of remembering the word!

Rejuvenating Your Learning Brain

It’s an active muscle – so use it. These Language101 lessons do exactly that: you can learn to speak Spanish Mexican style. And that’s just only the beginning.
